Patients attending Mulago Hospital for treatment travel from many, many miles all over the country and often do not have the resources to pay for their own accommodation whilst undergoing courses of treatment, which usually last for 5-6 weeks or more.
This means that they often have to stay as inpatients in Hospital blocking beds for several weeks in a hospital, which is already completely full. It also means that they are staying in a hospital environment when they could be attending as outpatients.
In order to address this situation, the Haven Hostel provides accomodation for patients attending treatment are able to stay close to the hospital without blocking hospital beds. This relieves pressure on inpatient beds at UCI and make it possible for more patients to have access to treatment facilities in Kampala. The same applies to the patients at the International Hospital Kampala.
